Artist Bio
Mateo Nicolucci explores the relationship between space, memory, and time. Through painting, he examines how physical environments can hold traces of experiences long after they have passed, and the tension between wanting to remain within a moment and recognizing its inevitable change. His paintings return to spaces that can no longer be experienced in the same way, considering the distance between an experience and how it is later remembered.
A sense of limited control runs throughout Nicolucci’s practice. Rather than viewing himself as the sole author of his experiences, he approaches them as both participant and spectator, observing moments as they unfold and later transform through memory and painting. His work does not attempt to recreate these spaces exactly, but instead uses painting as a way to sit with their impermanence and preserve something he knows cannot truly be preserved.
